Update-Delhi High Court-COVID-19

The Administrative and General Supervision Committee of the Delhi High Court vide its earlier order dated 23.03.2020, inter-alia decided to suspend its functioning till April 4 and also directed that all subordinate courts in the city shall also remain closed till 04.04.2020. It was also clarified that the period of suspension shall be treated as closure of court under Section 4 of the Limitation Act.

We all are aware that India’s government on Tuesday, 24.03.2020 ordered the country’s more than 1.3 billion citizens to remain under lockdown for three weeks in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus, w.e.f. 25.03.2020. India’s stay-at-home order puts nearly one-fifth of the world’s population under lockdown.

In view of the nationwide lockdown to contain the further spread of novel coronavirus, COVID-19, functioning of the Delhi High Court and its subordinate courts shall remain suspended till 15.04.2020.

Furthermore, the Hon’ble Delhi High Court while taking suo moto cognizance of the aforesaid extraordinary circumstances, under Article 226 & 227 of the Constitution of India, ordered that in all matters pending before the Delhi High Court  and courts subordinate to it, wherein such interim orders issued were subsisting as on 16.03.2020 and expired or will expire thereafter, the same shall stand automatically extended till 15.05.2020 or until further orders, except where any orders to the contrary have been passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in any particular matter, during the intervening period.
